Matar Paneer is an awesome side-Dish had along with roti, Chapathi, Naan and also goes excellent with rice. This dish is made with matar (Green Peas) and Paneer (Cottage Cheese) blend together in a creamy buttery base. This recipe can be made very easily and too quickly with guaranteed results. This is a famous north Indian dish often had in restaurants all around the world.Whenever I make fresh paneer at home I make this delicious Mattar paneer the following day. This Paneer matar masala recipe features a creamy base of onions,tomatoes and cashews in which Paneer and green peas are added and cooked.
|Cooking Time :20 mins|
|150g||Paneer / Cottage Cheese|
|100g||Green peas / Matar|
|1 tsp||Cumin Seeds|
|1/4 tsp||Turmeric Powder|
|1 tsp||Cumin Powder|
|1 tsp||Coriander Powder|
|1 tsp||Garam Masala powder|
|1 Tbsp||Kashmiri Chili powder or 1 tsp regular Chili powder|
|1 Tbsp||Yogurt / Curd|
|4||Tbsp Oil (2 tbsp for sauting + 2 Tbsp for Gravy)|
|Salt to Taste|
Step 1) To make base for our Mattar paneer heat some oil in a pan.Add chopped onions and salt to speed up the cooking process,Once the onions are translucent add Cashews, Ginger, Garlic(you can also use 1 Tbsp of ginger garlic paste) and saute it for a minute.Do not add too much of cashews as this may change the taste of the gravy.Then add chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes turns into a paste or until soft.
Step 2) Once the mixture cools down transfer it to a blender and grind it to a smooth paste...This is the base for our Matar paneer gravy
Step 3) Heat some oil and add Bay leaf, cinnamon stick, cumin seeds and turmeric powder.Mix it once and then add the Onion Tomato Puree and mix well
Step 4) Then add the masalas Cumin powder, Coriander powder, Garam masala powder, Chili powder.I have used Kashmiri chili powder to get a nice color,if you are using regular chili powder please reduce the amount of chili powder to 1 tsp.And also add Yogurt.After mixing all the ingredients add required water and salt.Cover and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes on a medium heat.
Step 5) Once the gravy starts to thicken add the green peas (Fresh or frozen both works fine).Then add the paneer (I have used homemade paneer).Gently mix the paneer with the gravy and again cover and cook for 3-4 minutes on a medium heat.
Step 6) Once the gravy is ready garnish it with some chopped coriander leaves and turn off the heat.You can also add a tbsp of cream on the top to get a creamy texture but since we have already added cashews the gravy looks just fine for me so I have not added any cream. Serve hot with your favorite main dishes.
