Snake Gourd and prawns / Pudalangai Kootu with Prawns

Snake Gourd with prawns is an excellent side-dish recipe which goes very well with rice.Snake Gourd is a low Calorie vegetable while having an exceptional taste.This Recipes was requested by my friend "Suganya", this took a while to get the proper recipe, finally I got this recipe from one of my friend's mother from Kerala.I never expected that this snake gourd porial would taste this good.Immediately after trying this recipe I have decided to make this Kootu more often.

Quantity INGREDIENTS


1 Medium sized Snake Gourd / Pudalangai / à®ªுடலங்காய்
250g Prawns / Shrimp
10 Shallots
1/4 tsp Mustard Seeds
1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
2 Dry Red Chilies
few Curry Leaves
1/4 tsp  Turmeric powder
Green Chilies
1/2 tsp  Chili Powder (optional)
1/2 cup Cup Grated Coconut  
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
Salt to taste

Cooking Method


Step 1) In a pan heat 1 tbsp Coconut oil (Coconut oil enhances the taste and adds a unique flavor to the Kootu. To temper add some mustard seeds, cumin seeds,dried red chilies, some curry leaves.Then add the shallots (small onions) and green Chilies and saute it for a minute.

Step 2) Add Turmeric powder,then add the Snake Gourd (Pudalangai) cut into small pieces,salt.Cover and cook it for 5-10 minutes.Add 1/4 cup of water if required.

Step 3) Once the Snake Gourd is half cooked add the prawns (shrimp), Chili powder (Chili powder is optional) mix it once

Step 4) Add the Grated Coconut and cook until the prawns are fully cooked (I have used medium sized prawns so it took 10 minutes)

  2. When prepared this added boiled and warm milk …but milk became curdy...I have ensured milk is new and jot expired. I added only when when hot milk turns to room temperature…Actually very nice recipe. I have tried this and eat with pasta sauce and is come out really well .
