Vendhaya Kulambu recipe

Vendhaya kulambu is a traditional recipe of Tamil Nadu which goes excellent with rice, this recipe is is made with a handful of ingredients . We can use kulambu podi or freshly ground masala to make this aromatic delicious kualmbu.

Quantity Ingredients for making Vendaya Kulambu

For masala
1 tbsp Coriander seeds
1/2 tsp pepper corns
1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
1/2 tsp Rice
1/2 tsp Fenugreek seeds
2-4 dried red chilies

For Kulambu
3 tbsp Oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp skinless black gram
10-12 fenugreek
1 dried red chili
1 spring Curry leaves
10  Garlic pods
1 cup Small onion(100g )
Tomato
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
pinch of Asafoetida
lemon sized Tamarind
2 cup Water

required Salt

Cooking Method


Step 1) Dry roast coriander , cumin, pepper, rice, fenugreek, red chili until aromatic. Transfer it to a blender and grind it to a fine powder. 

Step 2) Heat oil in  apn and temper with mustard, skinless black gram, dry red chili, fenugreek, curry leaves and garlic. Cook for a minute and add in chopped small onions and cook until soft. Then add tomato and cook until the tomato is mushy.

Step 3) Now add turmeric powder, asafoetida, freshly ground masala from step 1 and mix well. Then add tamarind extract, water , required salt and let the gravy reduce and thicken.

Step 4) Once oil separates and gravy thickens add some curry leaves and turn off the heat.

Our delicious and aromatic Vendaya kulambu is all ready to be enjoyed.
