Written By Angela Steffi on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 | 10:36:00 PM

Naan is an Indian flat bread recipe make in a Tandoor Oven / clay Oven which is maintained at high temperature. Since many of us do not have oven/ Tandoor oven at home I am sharing a recipe without oven , I am making it in iron pan. Butter Chicken and paneer butter masala goes excellent with this recipe. I made this recipe using yeast , which guarantees softness and elasticity to the recipe. Lets get started.

Serving Size           : 3 (makes 6)

Resting Time         : 90 - 120 min

Cooking Time        : 10 minutes
Difficulty:
QuantityIngredients for Naan Recipe
2 cupMaida / All purpose flour (250 gram)
1/4 cupWater  to activate yeast
1 tspYeast (3 grams)
1 tspSugar
1 tbspOil
requiredSalt

Butter for brushing

For Garlic Naan
4 tbspMelted Butter
3 cloves Garlic

Coriander leaves

Cooking Method

Step 1) Activate yeast:
Activating yeast is a very important step in making bread. Add Sugar to luke warm milk (105 F - 110 F), (42 - 43 C ) then add yeast to it and mix it well and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Once the yeast is activated lets prepare the dough.
  • If you do not have yeast use 1 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/4 cup of yogurt instead of yeast.(combine everything to the flour and mix well)

Step 2) Preparing the dough:
In a mixing bowl combine Maida, Oil, salt , yeast mixture, and required water. Mix well to form a soft and a sticky dough. ( I used approximately 3/4 cup water)
Once well mixed knead for minimum 8 - 10 minutes. Kneading softens the dough and soon after kneading dough will no more stick to your hands.

Step 3) Proofing:
Once after kneading apply few drops of oil on the top of the dough and on the sides of bowl to prevent drying. Keep it undisturbed for 1 to 1.30 hours or until the dough doubles in size. (cover it with a cloth)
  • If you are not using yeast the keep it aside of 2 hours to soften the dough.

Step 4) Now after 1.30 hours take a portion of the dough, dust with flour on both the sides to prevent sticking and then spread it with hands or use a rolling pin to roll out smooth.
Place it on a very hot iron pan and wait until you see bubbles.
Now flip it to the other side and cook for another 20 seconds until you get brown color on the other side. (We can show it on fire as well to get brown marks)

Once out of the pan grease it with melted butter to make it stay soft and fresh.

Step 5) For Garlic Naan:
Melt butter and add finely chopped garlic, chopped coriander leaves and mix well. Apply it over flattened dough and cook until done.

Step 6) Baking:
Now preheat the oven to the maximum temperature 550 F / 190 C and bake it for 6 -7 minutes or until done (golden brown) .

That's it our delicious Butter Naan and Garlic Naan is ready to be enjoyed with butter chicken , paneer butter masala and lot more.
Please do try this recipe at home and share it with your friends and family.

  2. Hi, Angela --

I have made your naan several times, and it always comes out great. I have a bunch of people coming this weekend for Indian night, and I am curious if you have any thoughts on making it this ahead of time. For example, I thought I might do the cast iron step the day before, then finish them in the oven or grill during the party. If I have to do it all while people are here, it'll be too much -- especially since I'll probably make four batches! Thank you!
