Somas Recipe

Somas is a traditional recipe of Tamil Nadu distributed during festivals especially during Diwali. My aunt first introduced this recipe during annual holidays, from then on I crave for this delicious crispy snack. Lets make this festive season special by making delicious Somas.

prep Time               : 1 hour

Cooking Time         : 10 minutes
Quantity Ingredients for Somas Recipe

For the dough
1 cup Maida (125 g)
2 tbsp Rava
pinch Salt
1 tbsp Ghee
6 tbsp Water or as required

For the Poornam / Stuffing
1/4 cup Roasted channa dal
1 tsp Ghee
1/4 cup  Cashews
1/2 cup grated Coconut
1/2 cup Sugar 

Cooking Method

Step 1) In a mixing bowl add maida, salt, Rava and ghee. Mix well then gradually add water to make a stiff dough. Knead the dough for a minimum of 10 - 12 minutes, kneading softens the dough. Cover and keep it aside.

Step 2) Roast the channa dal (pottu kadalai) in a pan for 2 -3 minutes over medium heat. Transfer it to a blender and grind it coarsely.
Now in the same pan melt ghee and then add cashews , grated coconut and roast until the moisture from the coconut is gone.

Step 3) Powder sugar along with cardamom and add all the ingredients - coconut + powdered channa dal + Sugar in a bowl and mix well.

Step 4) Take a portion of dough and roll it thin, Then grease the somas mold with oil and place the rolled sheet and then place the poornam and seal it tight with the help of water.

Step 5) Fry the somas in oil over medium heat until the bubbles settles down and golden. Do not fry on very hot oil.
