Mixture Recipe

Mixture is a famous tea time snack of south India very popular among kids and all ages of people. We may think that it is difficult to make , but its quite simple and can be made under 30 minutes. We can always adjust the ingredients to suit our taste, If you like to add more cashews, peanuts we can add more , we can make it spicy or less spicy we can always alter to suit our preference. Lets get started.

Quantity Ingredients for South Indian Mixture

For Kara Boondi
1 cupKadalai Maavu / Chickpea flour / Besan flour
1/4 cupRice flour
1 tspChili powder
pinch ofbaking soda
pinch ofAsafoetida / Perungaya thool / Hing

For Omapodi
1 cupKadalai Maavu / Chickpea flour / Besan flour
1/4 cupRice flour
1/2 tspTurmeric powder
1 tsp Oil
pinch ofAsafoetida / Perungaya thool / Hing

Required Salt

Required Water

Other Ingredients for frying
1/2 cup Roasted Channa dal / pottu kadalai
1/2 cup Peanuts
1/4 cup Cashews
1/2 cup Aval / Flattened Rice
2 spring Curry leaves

Oil for frying

For Seasoning
1 tsp Chili powder
pinch of  Asafoetida / Perungaya thool / Hing

Cooking Method


Step 1) Kara Boondi:
Into a mixing bowl add besan, rice flour, chili powder, salt, baking soda and asafoetida. Mix once and then gradually add water to form a semi thick batter.
Pour a ladle of batter on a laddu ladle and spread it with another spoon. Once the kara boondhis are nice and crispy take it off from oil.  




Step 2) Omapodi:
Into a mixing bowl add besan, rice flour, Turmeric powder, salt, oil and asafoetida. Mix once and then gradually add water to form a soft dough (chapathi dough)
Place it inside idiyappam achu and press it into oil .Flip it halfyway and fry until bubbles subside.
Break it into small pieces and keep it aside.




Step 3) Other Ingredients:
Fry roasted channa dal , peanuts, cahews, flattened rice and curry leaves (be careful while frying, do not burn them)









Step 4) Seasoning:
Finally combine everything together and add chili powder , salt and a pinch of asafoetida. Mix well and serve with hot coffee or tea. We can also add fried garlic to get garlic flavor.



That's it our delicious homemade spicy Tamil Nadu Mixture is ready to be enjoyed. Once cooled store it in air tight container to maintain its freshness and crispiness.

  1. We often call it Nimco as well.This is indeed a yummy snack .It is also low in calories so diet freak person could also take it with tea on tea time.
