Thaen Mittai is a traditional sweet recipe of Tamil Nadu which is very famous when we were Kids , It is almost forgotten recipe now, which was sold in Petti shops and annachi Kadai earlier, now we can find this sweet very rarely in few super markets. I am a huge fan of this yummy sweet which I make very often to recollect my childhood memories, This thean mittai is made with rice and urad dal mixture and the soaked in sugar syrup. When we take a bite into this candy , syrup (thaen) oozes out and makes it more interesting and enjoyable. This sweet can be stored in a airtight container and can be served later , but I never get a chance to eat the next day :( My husband and I finishes in the first day itself. Lets see how to make this yummy easy Thaen Mittai Recipe.

1 cup | Rice (Idli rice also works well) |
1/4 cup | Skinless black gram / Ulunthu / Urad dal |
1 pinch | Food color |
1/4 tsp | Baking Soda |
1/4 cup | Water (approximately) |
For Syryp | |
1.5 cup | Sugar |
3/4 cup | Water |
Cooking Method |
Then add some orange food color and baking soda. (adding food color is optional but in olden days they add food color to make it even more attractive)
Step 3) Heat oil in a pan - Oil should be on medium heat. Wet your hands in some water and make small balls and drop it in oil. It should come to to surface of the oil immediately .Fry until they are nice and crisp on all the sides.
Step 4) Once they are nice and crisp drain the excess oil and dunk into the sugar syrup immediately. The syrup should be little warm while adding the fried balls (if it is not warm heat it for a minute )
Soak in sugar syrup for 10 - 15 minutes.
Step 5) Once they are nicely soaked take it off from the syrup and allow it to dry for sometime and then we can store it in air tight container.
We can also coat the balls in sugar to make it even sweeter, but I love to eat without the sugar coating.
That's it our delicious childhood cadbury is ready to be enjoyed, when you bite into it you can feel the syrup oozing out from the inside. Happy Cooking !!!
