Onion Samosa Recipe

Written By Angela Steffi on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 | 11:15:00 PM

Samosas are very popular street food recipe found all across India. It has a crispy crunchy texture on the outside made with flour sheet and can be filled with various stuffing like Onion, potato, vegetables, and even chicken to make chicken Samosa and lot more.  In this recipe i am going to use onion as my main ingredient and going to add some vegetables for extra fun to make it an onion vegetable samosa. You can also use ready made spring sheet to make this recipe but i always prefer to make it at home because it quite simple and at the same time it is easy to make.
I have fried the samosas today , you can also bake them if you prefer. This Onion samosa completes a perfect rainy day snack with a cup of coffee or tea.

Preparation  Time    : 30 mins

Cooking Time           : 30 mins

Difficulty: Spice Level:

Quantity Ingredients for Onion Samosa

For the Samosa Dough
1/2 cup All purpose flour / Maida
1/2 CupWheat flour
1 tbsp Oil

Salt to taste

Water as required

For Stuffing
1Onion
3 tbsp grated Carrot
3 tbspgrated Beetroot
3 tbspgrated Potato
3Green Chlies
1/2 tsp Cumin powder
1/2 tspChilli powder
1/2 tsp Garam Masala
3 tbsp Coriander leaves chopped
1 tbspCurry leaves chopped

Salt to taste
For sticking
2 tbsp  All purpose flour / Maida
Water

Oil for frying

Cooking Method

Step 1) Samosa Dough:
In a mixing bowl combine all purpose flour, wheat flour, oil, salt and gradually add water to form a smooth and soft dough. You can also add cumin seeds, carom seeds to get extra flavor and taste. After kneading cover it with a damp cloth and set is aside for 20-30 minutes.

Step 2) Onion the stuffing:
Not only onions we can also add some vegetables to make the filling to make it even tastier so i have grated carrot, beetroot and potato , you can either add them directly to the onions or can saute for a minute and then add it to the onions.
For sauteing heat oil in a pan and add the grated vegetables, green chilies, cumin powder, garam masala and chili powder, saute it for 1-2 minutes and turn off the heat.

Step 3) Preparing the onions:
Onions has lot of moisture in it so place the chopped onions on paper towel and pat it dry to get rid of any excess moisture or you can also add 1/2 cup of pressed rice / poha / Aval to the onions to absorb the moisture released while frying.

Step 3) Samosa sheet:
After 30 minutes of resting divide the dough into 4 equal parts , cover the rest of the balls with a moist cloth to prevent drying.
Take a ball and press it on the top , apply some flour on the top and bottom to prevent sticking.Start rolling, roll it very thin as much thin as you can.

Step 5) Cutting:
After rolling into a sheet cut the edges and make it into a square, do not waste the excess trimmed sheet mix it with the rest of the balls and roll it again. After trimming the edges divide the sheet into 3 equal portions to form a rectangle.

After dividing the sheets place it on a damp sheet (squeeze all the moisture) and cover it with another sheet to prevent drying if in case it takes more time to roll the rest of the sheets.

Step 6) Heating the sheet:
place the sheet on a tawa and heat it for 2-3 seconds on both sides, this makes the sheets stay firm and it will be easy for us to fold. Make sure the tawa is not very hot.

Step 7) The stuffing:
Combine the onions and the vegetables together also add chopped coriander leaves, Curry leaves and salt . Mix it well and keep it aside.
Make a paste by mixing all purpose flour / Maida with some water to stick the edges of the samosa.

Step 8)Filling the Samosa Sheet:
Take a sheet and apply some maida paste to one end of the sheet and fold it inside. Press the tip to gum the corner. Again fold it inside to make the second fold.Take a spoon full of stuffing and place it inside the cone. apply some more maida paste all round the openings and press it firm to prevent any openings.

Step 9 ) Frying Onion Samosa:
Heat oil in a pan and drop the samosa one b one and fry until it turns golden brown then flip it to the other side and fry until both the sides become golden and crispy.

That's it our onion samosa lets say healthy onion samosa with all goodness of veggies are ready to be served with a cup of hot tea and with a side of chutneys and ketchup. Please give it a try and enjoy with your friends and family. Spread the Joy of Cooking !!!

  2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Add the 4 tablespoons on oil and rub it in with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Slowly add about 4 tablespoons water -- or a tiny bit more -- and gather the dough into a stiff ball.
