Onion Tomato Chutney

Onion Tomato chutney is also known as Kara Chutney in Tamil is a very popular and a famous chutney in Tamil Nadu. No South Indian Break fast like idli , dosa, pongal is complete without this delicious chutney. My favorite combination is with kara paniyaram and idli. This is a basic Chutney recipe which is loved by all people and it tastes awesome. 
This chutney is made with onions, tomatoes and tempered to get nice awesome taste and aroma.

Kara-Chutney-Recipe


Serving Size           : 3  people

Preparation Time  : 5 minutes

Cooking Time        : 15 minutes

Quantity Ingredients for Kara Chutney
2 tbsp Oil
2 tsp Urad Dal
Onions
2 Tomatoes
4-5 Dry red chilies
small  ball of tamarind
2 cloves Garlic
1 strandCoriander leaf

Salt to Taste

To Temper
1 tsp  Oil
1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
2Dry red chilies
1 strand Curry leaves

Cooking Method


Step 1) Heat Oil in a kadai and once the oil is hot add urad dal / ulunthu and saute until it turns golden. Then add dry red chilies. onions , salt and saute it until the onions turns translucent.
Once the onions turns translucent add a small piece of tamarind and also add garlic.


Step 2) Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes soften and the raw smell is gone.Once done add some coriander leaves and turn off the heat. Let it cool completely

Step 3) Once cooled add it to a blender and grid it to a smooth paste.


Step 4) No chutney is complete without tempering so to temper heat a tsp of oil and add mustard seeds, once the seeds pops out add dry red chilies and curry leaves. mix once and turn off the heat. Add the tempering on to the chutney and mix.

    1. heat oil and roast urad dal and dry red chillies
    2. add onions, garlic, tamarind , tomatoes, salt and saute until well cooked
    3. Temper and add it to the chutney
    4. Kara Chutney is ready to be enjoyed with Dosa, Idli , paniyaram
